A standard 12-cup muffin tin holds ½ cup per cup filled to the brim — 6 cups across all 12 — and takes about ⅓ cup of batter in each at the usual two-thirds fill.

Data & method:
Brim-full capacity (water poured to the rim) from Joy of Baking's pan size chart.
Batter fill is the standard two-thirds convention; quarts and metric are exact US-cup
conversions (4 cups = 1 quart). The calculations are covered by automated tests. How we calculate →
Check any pan's volume
The calculator measures simple pan shapes — rounds, squares and rectangles — so it can't model a 12-cup muffin tin exactly and starts from its defaults. The capacity figure above is the one to trust for cupcake tins.

Swapping a recipe into or out of this pan
These hold about the same batter but bake differently — the batter sits at a different
depth (shallower runs faster, deeper slower), or a centre tube changes how heat reaches
it: 8" round (6 cups), 8½×4½" loaf (6 cups). Treat these as a change of bake, not a straight swap.
Check the batter comes no more than about two-thirds up the new pan. The cake pan converter
works out the exact time and temperature shift for any pair.
Filling guidance: two-thirds is the working rule for butter and oil cakes. Batters with big
oven spring — angel food, chiffon, some sponges — want more headroom, and dense batters
(brownies, blondies) tolerate fuller pans because they barely rise.
Converting a recipe to or from the 12-cup muffin tin
6 cups filled to the brim (about 1420 ml / 1.4 liters), per Joy of Baking's pan size chart. For batter, fill to about two-thirds: roughly 4 cups, leaving room to rise.
How much does one muffin cup hold?
A standard cup — 2¾ inches across and 1½ inches deep in Joy of Baking's chart — holds ½ cup filled to the brim, so about ⅓ cup of batter at a two-thirds fill. The shallower 1⅛-inch-deep cups hold only ¼ cup.
How many cups of batter go in a 12-cup muffin tin?
About 4 cups — the standard two-thirds fill. Fuller than that and rising batter can overflow; much less and the bake comes out thin and dries. Cakes with big oven spring (angel food, some sponges) want even more headroom.
What can I substitute for a 12-cup muffin tin?
No pan in the standard chart matches both its 6-cup capacity and its batter depth. These are within 10% by volume, but not like-for-like: 8" round (same batter, but cupcakes and a cake pan bake very differently); 8½×4½" loaf (same batter, but cupcakes and a cake pan bake very differently). The pan converter works out the time and temperature change for any pair.
Is the pan's stamped size the inside measurement?
It should be — pan sizes refer to interior top dimensions. Measure inside edge to inside edge, and depth from the interior base to the rim. Outside measurements add the metal's thickness and rolled rims, which overstate the pan.
